Vermont Philharmonic Presents Vermont Star Musicians In Winter Concert

The Vermont Philharmonic will celebrate Vermont musical talent in a concert entitled “Stars of Winter,” featuring a gifted young pianist and a celebrated trio. Winter Concert is on Saturday, February 11th at 7:30 PM at the Elley-Long Music Center at St Michael’s College with conductor & music director Lou Kosma.

A senior at Burlington High School, Laura Zhou-Hackett won the 2023 Jon Borowicz Memorial Scholarship Competition.  She will perform the lyrical Adagio from Felix Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto in D minor, op.40.  Laura studies with Paul Orgel, and is active in the Vermont Youth Orchestra, the St. Paul's Cathedral Young Artist Recital, and the Vermont All-State Music Festival. She also plays piano for the Faith United Methodist Church in South Burlington.

The second half of the concert is devoted to Beethoven’s spectacular Concerto for Violin, Cello, and Piano, Opus 56 – the so-called “Triple Concerto” – performed by the Vermont Philharmonic and the world-class Champlain Trio.  VP audiences know violinist Letitia Quante as the orchestra’s inspiring concertmaster and may remember cellist Emily Taubl’s breathtaking performance of Dvorak’s Cello Concerto in 2019.  Vermont fans of chamber music will recognize pianist Hiromi Fukuda’s performances as an artist-faculty member of the Green Mountain Chamber Music Festival. The musicians have earned degrees from distinguished conservatories.  They are involved with important musical institutions such as Vermont Symphony Orchestra, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, Amherst College, and the University of Vermont, and have concertized extensively.

The program opens with Aaron’s Copland’s colorful Outdoor Overture, followed by Richard Strauss’ Serenade for Winds.

Now in its 64th season, the Vermont Philharmonic has been making beautiful music since 1959. It is Vermont’s oldest community orchestra. Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $5 for students. For more information, visit vermontphilharmonic.com
